One of the most common questions we’re asked by our customers is how to create a particular lighting effect and, more specifically in regard to weddings – how to create canopies! Light canopies instantly transform any venue into a warm and inviting space. By effectively creating a ceiling of light, you allow your venue to take on an almost other-worldly feel, and it doesn’t hurt that beautiful lighting will always enhance your event photos!
Canopies are always a popular choice for wedding lighting, but for first-time event planners the prospect of creating such an effect may seem a little daunting! Don’t panic – it’s nowhere near as complicated as it might appear and, with a little preparation, installing your wedding lights really can be a straightforward and hassle-free affair!
The first thing to consider would be the type of lights you want to use, if you favour festoon lights or fairy lights, or if you would like a horizontal canopy, you will probably want to choose a long string of lights that can be run backwards and forwards from one side of your venue to the other. Alternatively, if you’re producing an outdoor canopy you can use wire to create parallel lines and loop your lights back and forth over them – we find catenary wire works very well for this, available at your local DIY/home store.
Here you can see our lovely team doing exactly that in an outdoor space – and the beautiful finished creation!
If instead, you’d like to create a circular canopy falling from a central point, or have the lights coming from a peaked ceiling, you may find curtains lights to be a much more convenient solution. Curtain lights feature a solid ‘top cable’ which varying lengths of light drops can fall from at regular intervals – making it very easy to create a neat and uniform overall effect. You can see our curtain lights being used below to turn this large venue into a cosy, sparkling wedding dream!
These are only a few suggestions for how lights can be used to wow your guests on your big day. With a variety of lighting styles and options – there’s bound to be something to suit everyone! Our sales team are always just a phone call or email away – whether it’s installation advice, a light hire quote or help placing an order, we’ll be very happy to hear from you!
